Significant 5.1 Quake Hits Guatemala

Significant magnitude 5.1 quake hits 143 km southwest of Guatemala City, Guatemala

The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Guatemala near the town of Champerico only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Wednesday 11 November 2020 at 9.21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Champerico (pop. 7,800) located 28 km from the epicenter, Tiquisate (pop. 18,200) 43 km away, Retalhuleu (pop. 36,700) 46 km away, Santo Domingo SuchitepĆ©quez (pop. 6,300) 46 km away, Nueva ConcepciĆ³n (pop. 11,100) 47 km away, Villa Nueva (pop. 406,800) 131 km away, Mixco (pop. 473,100) 134 km away, and Guatemala City (pop. 994,900) 143 km away.
