Russian President Vladimir Putin faulted the U.S. for prolonging the fighting in Ukraine on Tuesday and predicted the world as the U.S. currently sees it is “doomed.”
In a Kremlin address, Putin said the U.S. and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies are “destroying the European security system.” He cited NATO expanding, moving weapons and forces eastward and ignoring Russian security concerns.
Putin said the U.S. and its allies dominate international policy in a unipolar fashion. He said “globalist elites” are distracting their citizens from their own socio-economic problems like “falling living standards, unemployment, poverty, de-industrialization” by blaming countries like Russia and China.
Putin then said this “unipolar” trend would end as countries moved towards a multipolar model, adding that nations could “overcome threats and risks in the military-political sphere, increase the level of trust between countries and ensure their sustainable development only by fundamentally strengthening the system of the modern multipolar world.”
“The era of the unipolar world order is a thing of the past,” Putin added. “No matter how the beneficiaries of the current globalist model cling to the usual state of affairs, it is doomed. Geopolitical changes on a historical scale are going in a completely different direction.”
Putin also accused the U.S. and its allies of propping up Ukraine’s government at the cost of turning the country’s citizens into “cannon fodder.”
“They need conflict to maintain their hegemony,” Putin said of the U.S. and NATO. “That is why they prepared the fate of cannon fodder for the people of Ukraine, implemented the ‘anti-Russia’ project, turned a blind eye to the spread of neo-Nazi ideology, to the massacres of the inhabitants of Donbas, pumped and continue to pump the Kyiv regime with weapons, including heavy ones.”
Putin went on to say the U.S. is not only prolonging the conflict in Ukraine but destabilizing Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Putin alluded to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Taiwan as part of this pattern of destabilizing behavior. While Taiwan governs itself independently, China considers the island a part of its territory and called Pelosi’s visit a breach of sovereignty.
Putin called Pelosi’s Taiwan visit “a brazen demonstration of disrespect for the sovereignty of other countries and for [U.S.] international obligations. We see this as a carefully planned provocation.”
