A small earthquake struck the base of Mt. Diablo early Tuesday morning. The 2.6 magnitude quake struck just outside Danville around 3:16 a.m. Danville was rattled by a series of seven small earthquakes on Sunday, followed by a 3.3 magnitude quake in Alamo Monday.
This morning’s seismic activity was recorded 3.1 miles away from Alamo, 3.7 miles away from Danville, and 5 miles from Walnut Creek.
Viewers say they felt it as far as San Pablo. One woman tells KRON4, “Felt it here in San Pablo at 4:11 a.m. bed jolting for about 10 seconds!” No injuries or damage have been reported.
This Mt. Diablo tremor occurs after several small earthquakes struck Sunday in the Danville area, two of which were registered as magnitude 3.0. Five quakes were separated by only minutes in the morning.
Again, there were no reports of damage or injuries, and no calls for service had been received related to the earthquakes. Yesterday, a M3.3 earthquake rattled Alamo.
Mount diablo – a geologic anomaly
Mount Diablo is a geologic anomaly about 30 miles (50 km) east of San Francisco. The mountain is the result of geologic compression and uplift caused by the movements of the Earth’s plates. The mountain lies between converging earthquake faults and continues to grow slowly -from three to five millimeters each year. While the principal faults in the region are of the strike-slip type, a significant thrust fault (with no surface trace) is found on the mountain’s southwest flank.
