A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck in the Atlantic Ocean about 33 miles southeast of Southampton, New York, at about 7:22 a.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake's epicenter was measured at about 4.4 miles deep.
A magnitude 3.0 event is "[n]ot felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions," according to the USGS, which received about 55 reports of feeling the earthquake from the public as of Tuesday afternoon.
No damage was reported from the earthquake.
The 3.0 quake was the largest recorded by the LaMont-Doherty Cooperatvie Seismographic Network for several years in the area where it hit.
