Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared Wednesday that his government would press forward with unwavering determination to secure a fully sovereign and geographically contiguous Palestinian state with eastern Jerusalem as its capital.
According to a report from World Israel News, the pledge came during a joint news conference in Ankara with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Erdoğan accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of attempting to erase the Palestinian cause from the world’s agenda by exploiting regional chaos and conflict. “They will not succeed,” he stated firmly. The Turkish leader further charged that Israel was pursuing unlawful actions in Judea and Samaria and strongly opposed any provocations intended to alter the status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and other holy sites in Jerusalem.
He also stressed the need to create conditions for the reconstruction of Gaza and reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and defending their rights.
Abbas had arrived in the Turkish capital on Tuesday afternoon for a two-day visit. He was received at the airport by Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat and the Palestinian Authority’s ambassador to Turkey, Nasri Abu Jaish.
The accompanying delegation included senior figures such as PLO Executive Committee member Ziad Abu Amr, Fatah Central Committee member Maj. Gen. Majed Faraj, who heads the Palestinian Authority’s General Intelligence Service, and Abbas advisers Majdi al-Khaldi and Mahmoud al-Habbash.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich sharply condemned the visit, labeling Abbas “an enemy at the head of a terror authority that encourages and funds terror against the State of Israel.” Smotrich urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to block Abbas from returning to Israel and Judea and Samaria, insisting that the Palestinian Authority itself “must be dismantled.”
