A 70-year-old man was among those worshippers visiting a shrine as a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit.
Daniel Smith was one of 'thousands' waiting to see the shrine in the coastal city of Toyama as part of a New Year's tradition to pray for good luck when disaster struck.
'The first tremor started very slowly and everybody kind of left it off... And then it's just a violent shake, I mean violent shaking,' he told Sky News.
'At first people just were stunned and they kept trying to go to the shrine.
'Then finally one of the priests came out and said 'run', you know. And then basically everybody just started running.'
This is the dramatic moment a ski lift shakes violently during the earthquake in Japan.
Video captures panicked skiers stuck on the lift as the quake brings it to a standstill.
The steel wire ropes on top of the lift loudly bang against the towers, causing a terrifying sound as the chairs shake out of control.
At least 93 earthquakes have hit Japan today, according to data by Japan's meteorological agency.
The magnitude of the quakes ranges from 3.0 to 7.6.
