Very Strong 6.1 Quake Hits South Of Panama

Very strong mag. 6.1 earthquake - South of Panama on Saturday, 17 July 2021 at 20:56 (GMT) - information

A shallow magnitude 6.0 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Canegua, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Saturday 17 July 2021 at 2:56 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 6.2 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
