Who Exactly Is The New Pope?

Some interesting details are starting to emerge regarding the newly elected Pope:

Bergoglio‘s age was a surprise, considering that many commentators assumed the cardinals would select someone younger. But, alas, they chose a man who, by expert accounts, is more than qualified for the job.

The Catholic Church’s new leader was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936 and he has four brothers and sisters. Bergoglio was born to an Italian immigrant railroad father and a mother who was a housewife. While he originally wanted to be a chemist, his path took a very obvious turn. In 1958, the National Catholic Reporter reports that he joined the Society of Jesus and began preparing for the priesthood. Just over five decades later, he will now lead the church that he joined as a young man.

Considering these personal life choices, it’s no surprise that Pope Francis is a fierce defender of the poor. In the past, he has spoken openly about his belief that there is an “unjust distribution of goods.”
In 2007, he said, “We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least. The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers.”
Pope Francis’ views have caused some to wonder if he endorses government-centric social justice. A Business Insider piece from last year claimed that he would embrace this ideology and embed it into the church if selected.
“Social Justice moves to the front of the Church’s concerns,” the outlet wrote of Bergoglio’s potential election. “He’d also carry out a humble papacy. Say goodbye to Benedict’s ostentation in papal clothing.”
Of course, social justice takes on many forms. Encouraging believers to treat the poor well and mandating that citizens pay more in income taxes so that monies can be redistributed — well, those are two very different animals. We’ll have to wait and see on which side Bergoglio falls.

Below is an interesting observation regarding the name that this Pope has adopted (thanks to an anon poster who made the same observation in the comments section a few posts below) and could provide an interesting link to the prophecies of St. Malachy:

St. Francis of Assisi (ItalianSan Francesco d'Assisi, baptized Giovanni, bornFrancesco di Pietro di Bernardone[2]; 1181/1182 – October 3, 1226)[3] was anItalian Catholic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Franciscan Order, the women’s Order of St. Clare, and the Third Order of Saint Francis for men and women not able to live the lives of itinerant preachers followed by the early members of the Order of Friars Minor or the monastic lives of the Poor Clares.[4]Though he was never ordained to the Catholic priesthood, Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history.[4]

They are sometimes referred to as "God's Marines" or the church's "storm troopers" - a band of priests and missionaries who live sparse lives and are willing to accept religious orders anywhere in the world, sometimes living in extreme conditions.

Now, in a world first, a Jesuit has been appointed Pope in a surprise election that Australian Jesuits say could lead the Catholic Church in a new direction.

That humility and social conscience is one of the founding principles of the Society of Jesus, the liberal Catholic religious order whose members are known as Jesuits and who are required to take vows of poverty, chastity, obedience to Christ and obedience to the Pope.
They have been given the nicknames "God's Marines" or religious "storm troopers", in recognition of their 16th-century founder Ignatius of Loyola, who had a military background, as well as the Jesuits' willingness to travel throughout the world on missionary work.

The Jesuits' first focus was the conversion of Muslims, then halting the spread of Protestantism.

Now that statement above is interesting. "...halting the spread of Protestantism"?

Here's something interesting :

The definition of Jesuit . Sounds nice until you read line two .

Jes·u·it

[ jéoo it ]

1.member of Roman Catholic religious order: a member of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order engaged in missionary and educational work worldwide.
2.offensive term: an offensive term for somebody regarded as crafty or scheming, especially somebody who uses deliberately ambiguous or confusing words to deceive others
3.of Jesuits: relating to or belonging to the members of the Society of Jesus

Lets hope he's line 3

Peace

As a former Catholic, and having read "Petrus Romanus", I was really following the selection of the current pope. The authors of Petrus Romanus think that this pope Francis "fills the bill" - stating that the only thing necessary for Petrus Romanus to be ''the last pope'' was Italian ancestry, which Pope Francis has.

Francis' views on gay marriage, abortion, and euthanasia are very Christian orthodox. I know many assume that most Catholics aren't saved, but the humility that has marked the life of the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires appears like that which comes from a living faith. I agree there are a number of concerns also - notably Bergoglio presiding over an interfaith assembly several years ago. As others have said, time will tell.

Hi Everyone~

I am feeling a strong prompting to share a different prospective on this topic of the AC chasing or distractions of the world that we can prevent. This is not a slight on anyone but a simple different point of view from above.

How often do we pray for God to block our enemies or those things that come against us? How often do we profess Jesus died on the cross for our sins so we can spend eternity with him? How often are we re-connecting in those things that are of God instead of the things of this world? How many times have we asked him to get us out of this or that, only to go right back to the behaviors of the world that got us into these tough situations? Yes, I understand some are not of our choosing, but most can be diverted through a course correction :)

I say this humbly, as we all have a Father who has and is preparing a glorious place for us to return to soon. A God who sacrificed his Son so we can plead the blood of Jesus, not the words of man while trying to figure out who is of evil and evil pursuits. A son who would be our only way to salvation and eternity with our loving Father, God. So why are we looking at the AC or those things that will be behind us? The choice is always there, I guess we must choose.

I have shared this before, but now may be a good time again as we are all tired, weak and can easily fall prey to those enticing subjects, that can only draw us further away from the Lord and his desires for our lives in these last days.

Luke 16:13

No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

So lovingly I say, maybe our time can be better served in a spiritual re-connect of sorts? A sit down--quietly with him and him alone. Letting the Holy Spirit reach us through other media means even if you can't get to church. Do something counter to what you would call 'normal' in Christ.
Not traditional songs we have grown tired of as we wait. Maybe try and hour of listening to gospel songs or reading Proverbs or Psalms and see what new awareness ignites in us that way.

Anything to reconnect to the wondrous glory of God and his word and more importantly, his mission. We are soldiers for Christ and we should be standing for him and all he stands for. Sometimes we can become so complacent in our 'knowing' that we may be drifting further and further away.

Lord make us over again!

God Bless All!!

Create in me a clean heart O God and renew a right spirit within me.

Thank you GG for this reminder . I even studied and taught today on Hebrews 12 and Christs names in all of Rev and yet when I came home to comment I went negative.
I consider your words a timely and very helpful reminder.
Prone to complacency..

Please know that was a pure HS moment and a yearning to relay that message after 45min. :). I have been hitting some blank spots in my walk and today he really wanted to remind me that when I don't know what else to do, just to stand.

That is when I received this message and had to check just what is it I am standing for?? He knows how hard it is and how much we are under attack, but I am sure he will be noting how our final moments were spent in witness :)

God Bless!!
