Germany’s incoming chancellor has accused President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance of a “manufactured escalation” against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.
Freidrich Merz, whose Christian Democratic Union topped the poll in last Sunday’s federal election, made the remarks during a press conference in the German city of Hamburg on Monday.
“It was not a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelenskyy, but obviously a manufactured escalation in this meeting in the Oval Office,” he said of the exchange.
“Europe is now under huge pressure to act quickly.”
Merz must have missed the reports on how Zelensky admitted in a meeting with US Senators before his White House visit that he had decided to torpedo the mineral deal.
Last week, Merz harshly criticized Trump and Elon Musk and said that the U.S. could no longer be seen as a reliable ally:
My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA’, Mr. Merz said. ‘I never thought I would have to say something like this on a television program.
But after Donald Trump’s statements last week at the latest, it is clear that the Americans, at least this part of the Americans, this administration, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.
