For its part, the Israeli government has announced that Hezbollah, its patron Iran, and the Beirut government bear "sole responsibility" for the escalation of violence on the Israel-Lebanon border, and has hinted that the escalation may be methodical.

"Lebanon and Hezbollah, led by Iran, bear the sole responsibility for the worsening security situation in the north ," said government spokesman David Menser.

"Whether through diplomatic efforts - or otherwise - Israel will restore security on our northern border," he added.

Earlier today, incoming rocket warning sirens sounded in towns in northern Israel, with Israeli officials saying around 150 rockets were fired from Lebanon.

Israel's Kan TV network broadcast footage of rocket interceptions over Israeli towns, including the town of Safed, about 12 km from the border.
