CIA: U.S. 'Confident' China Is Considering Sending Lethal Weapons To Russia

In an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, CIA Director William Burns confirmed the Biden administration's claims that China is considering sending lethal weapons to Russia. "We're confident that the Chinese leadership is considering the provision of lethal equipment," Burns said.

"We also don't see that a final decision has been made yet, and we don't see evidence of actual shipments of lethal equipment," he added.

Regarding recent warnings issued by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Burns said, "That's why, I think, Secretary Blinken and the President have thought it important to make very clear what the consequences of that would be as well... because it would be a very risky and unwise bet."

Meanwhile, China's silence during the G20 meetings has been getting a lot of attention. China refused to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which caused several finance ministers to fail to agree on a closing statement after a summit in India.

Beijing refused to accept parts of a G20 statement that denounced Russia's aggression toward Ukraine "in the strongest terms."

Moscow has said that "anti-Russian" Western countries had "destabilized" the G20. Those remarks were made after China last week published a plan to end the war. The plan, however, has been viewed by many as being pro-Russian.

In a G20 statement that condemned the war between Moscow and Kyiv, a footnote was included that stated, "agreed to by all member countries except Russia and China."
