A series of earthquakes epicentered near Anza in southern Riverside County rattled parts of Southern California Friday.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported at least six earthquakes - the strongest of them was a preliminary magnitude 4.9 - about 10 miles southeast of Anza. Aftershocks were also reported near Bombay Beach and Ocotillo Wells.
The quakes struck between 6:53 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., according to the USGS.
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported Friday evening at 6:53 p.m. Pacific time eight miles from Palm Springs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred 13 miles from Palm Desert, 13 miles from La Quinta, 15 miles from Rancho Mirage and 18 miles from Cathedral City.
According to the USGS, it was felt across a wide area of San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties, with some people as far away as Los Angeles saying they felt it. It was followed by several aftershocks. On Twitter, earthquake expert Lucy Jones said the quake hit either near or on the San Jacinto fault, which she said has seen many quakes of that range over the years.
There were no reports of damage.
