Hamas top dog Khaled Mashal: ‘As long as there is occupation, there will be resistance’

Hamas top dog Khaled Mashal: ‘As long as there is occupation, there will be resistance’

The trick here is that in reality, there is no occupation, so there should be no resistance. The fact is that Israel is the only country in the world with any actual legal right to the territories that today comprise Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. This is established in the Mandate for Palestine, which was intended to establish a Jewish national home, and is still the governing legal authority for who actually has a legal right to the area, as it has not been superseded. Also, even by the terms of Mashal’s own argument, there has been no occupation in Gaza since 2005, so there should be no resistance. Mashal is couching what is actually a jihad to destroy the Jewish state in terms of occupation and resistance because he knows those terms will resonate among leftists in the West.

“Khaled Mashal, Head Of Hamas Abroad At Al-Jazeera Forum In Doha: As Long As There Is Occupation, There Will Be Resistance – Resistance Is The Right Of Every Nation,” MEMRI, February 8, 2026:

Khaled Mashal, head of Hamas Abroad, said in a February 8, 2026 session of the Al-Jazeera Forum in Doha, Qatar, that as long as there is occupation, there will be resistance. He elaborated that resistance is the right of any people under occupation and is embedded in the memory of every nation, noting that the history of all nations begins with great battles against their enemies. Mashal stressed that October 7 was not the beginning of the conflict.

Khaled Mashal: “The philosophy of the resistance is that as ling [sic] as there is occupation, there will be resistance. Resistance is the right of people under occupation, and it is part of international law and divine laws. Resistance is part of the memory of nations. It is part of the human memory that nations are proud of. Today, when y read the history of any nation, it starts with its big battles against its enemies. This is how we analyze Palestinian behavior. We should not see October 7 as the beginning of the conflict.
