UN Pact for the Future: Who are the likely contenders to be appointed as the UN’s “special envoy for future generations”?

UN Pact for the Future: Who are the likely contenders to be appointed as the UN’s “special envoy for future generations”?

At the ‘Summit of the Future’ in September 2024, attendees adopted the United Nations’ ‘Pact for the Future with its annexes: the ‘Declaration on Future Generations’ and the ‘Global Digital Compact’.  With these three documents, the United Nations (“UN”) is pushing for centralised global governance with itself at the helm.

As we noted in a previous article, the ‘Pact for the Future’ dilutes the paramount importance of human rights.  The ‘Declaration on Future Generations’ raises questions about who can legitimately represent the interests of hypothetical future generations. And the ‘Global Digital Compact’ is an attempt by the UN to place itself in the driver’s seat to manage and control the digital revolution for all nations.

The premise of the ‘Declaration on Future Generations’ is that our lives must be subjected to global diktats so as not to endanger the generations yet to be born – in other words, our lives will be controlled and restricted by the diktats of a small select group who will base their decisions on hypothetical scenarios that may or may not impact any number of unknown generations who live in unknown locations under unknown conditions.   It is simply a fortune telling scam.

As well as guiding principles and commitments, the Declaration lists actions to be taken.  One such action is to appoint “a Special Envoy for Future Generations.”  Another is to select a small group of people to review progress made on its implementation:

32 . Recognising the important advisory and advocacy role that the United Nations should play with respect to future generations, we:

(a) Take note of the Secretary-General’s proposal to appoint a Special Envoy for Future Generations to support the implementation of this Declaration;

(b) Decide to convene an inclusive high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly on future generations that will review the implementation of this Declaration during the eighty-third session of the General Assembly and provide updates on the actions taken to safeguard the needs and interests of future generations; …

In the following, Jacob Nordangård gives us some details on the three likely contenders for the UN’s “Special Envoy for Future Generations.”

In the policy brief ‘To Think and Act for Future Generations’ the UN Secretary General proposed the appointment of a Special Envoy or Guardian for Future Generations, and convening a dedicated forum for future generations to “advance implementation” of the ‘Declaration for Future Generations’ (preferably in the now defunct Trusteeship Council).

However, the reception was lukewarm among UN Member States, resulting in a watered-down compromise at the ‘Summit of the Future’. The proposal for an Envoy was “noted” in the ‘Pact for the Future, together with a decision to only convene a high level plenary meeting on future generations at the 83rd General Assembly.

But the powerful players behind the technocratic agenda don’t give up that easily. They know what they want to achieve.

In October 2024, UN Secretary General António Guterres announced at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference that he would soon appoint a “UN Envoy for Future Generations.” He reiterated this intention on April 26 at the ‘Pact for the Future Interactive Dialogue’.1

According to the policy brief, the Envoy will be “representing and advocating the interests of future generations” with the help of, what can be labelled as, modern-day divination techniques. This means:

Facilitating long-term thinking and better use of foresight and understanding of future risks, challenges and opportunities by the United Nations system, in support of Member States, leveraging the Futures Lab network and science advisory mechanism, among other resources.
