NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is convening an emergency NATO-Ukraine Council at the request of Kiev, a representative of the North Atlantic Alliance announced today.
"The meeting will be held at the level of ambassadors," said NATO representative Farah Dakhlala . "Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is expected to brief allies, via video link, on the situation on the battlefield and priorities in terms of equipment needs," he added.
The NATO-Ukraine Council was established last year, with the aim of better coordination between the alliance and Kiev. Council meetings are usually attended by ambassadors from NATO member states and Ukrainian officials.
The NATO spokeswoman points out ahead of the meeting that it was preceded by a "barrage of heavy attacks by Russia against civilians and infrastructure of Ukraine".
"NATO allies have provided substantial support to Ukraine's air defenses and are committed to further strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities," he added.
