NATO will hold its annual nuclear deterrent exercise Steadfast Noon, which will take place in Italy, Croatia and the Mediterranean, the organization's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after a meeting of the alliance's defense ministers in Brussels.

"Our exercise will help ensure the reliability, effectiveness and security of our nuclear deterrent," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

"It sends a clear message that NATO will protect and defend all Allies."

The exercise involves fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The exercise is scheduled to last from Monday to October 26.

Stoltenberg said Russia's war in Ukraine is a reminder of the important role NATO's nuclear weapons play in deterring aggression.
