5.5 Quake Hits Colombia

Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 98 km northwest of Barrancabermeja, Colombia in the morning


5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Barrancabermeja, Municipio de Barrancabermeja, Santander, Colombia. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022, at 7:49 am local time, at a shallow depth of 13 km below the surface.

The event was filed by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the first seismological agency to report it.

A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.9 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
