This past weekend passed without anything out of the ordinary. On Friday, the traditional march of “peaceful” demonstrators returned to the Gaza Strip border fence, hurling explosives and rocks at the Israeli soldiers deployed there. On Saturday night, three rockets were fired at the southern city of Sderot, and shortly after, Israeli warplanes responded by bombing Hamas positions in Gaza. Like I said, a normal weekend.
It is amazing how people can get used to living under extreme circumstances. For us, such happenings are barely worth mentioning any longer in the course of daily conversation. But, can you imagine a rocket attack on a German or American city? It would take an entire month, at least, for the entire nation to again be at ease and return to the routine of everyday life.
Yes, we in Israel have unfortunately become accustomed to this. In the last year alone, 1,500 rockets have been fired at our cities!
But we have more important things to deal with. Absent a miracle, the Knesset will once again dissolve itself on Wednesday, kicking off the third national election in less than a year. Until then, a few more rockets will be fired at us, but we’re already used to that.
