Shallow M6.4 earthquake hits Pacific-Antarctic Ridge, South Pacific Ocean


A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.4 hit the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge at 04:57 UTC on August 3, 2025. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.

The epicenter was located 3 440 km (2 137 miles) SW of Hanga Roa, Valparaiso, Chile, and 3 545 km (2 200 miles) E of Waitangi, Chatham Islands, New Zealand.

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
