Northeast braces for bomb cyclone as intense winter storm leaves 2,000 flights delayed, 500 canceled

deadly bomb cyclone is poised to hit the Northeast on Sunday after torrential flooding brought by the storm killed at least 11 people in Kentucky

Winter Storm Jett is moving from the Mideast over the Great Lakes towards the East Coast, impacting states all the way from New York to Florida

More than 2,000 flights within, into and out of the US had been delayed and more than 1,000 canceled as of 10am on Sunday, according to FlightAware.

Weather.com meteorologist Orelon Sidney said icy conditions could make travel 'impossible' in some locations.

Bone-chilling cold is expected to hit the Northern Plains with low temperatures into the minus 30s F near the Canadian border.

Meanwhile, wind chill temperatures of minus 40 Fahrenheit (minus 40 Celsius) to minus 50 F (minus 45.6 C) are expected in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Heavy snowfall amounts were also expected in parts of New England and northern New York.

In some areas, wind gusts could reach 60 mph (about 97 kph) and create 'hazardous whiteout conditions,' the National Weather Service said.

The storm is expected to move past the US into the Atlantic by Monday morning - leaving behind a thick layer of snow with up to 12 inches expected in the north-east.

It comes after extreme flooding in Kentucky killed two people this week. A 73-year-old man was found dead in floodwaters in Clay County, WKYT-TV reported

Clay County Emergency Management Deputy Director Revelle Berry confirmed the fatality but did not provide additional details.

Severe storms also swept through parts of Florida and Georgia, where tornado watches were in effect early Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife said there was an investigation into a death and a rescue operation was underway in Hart County, WNKY-TV reported

The station reported a youth died and a second victim was missing in flooding Saturday evening.
