A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the Croatian Seismological Institute as M6.1 hit southern Bosnia and Herzegovina at 21:07 UTC (23:07 local time) on April 22, 2022. EMSC is reporting it as M5.7 at a depth of 5 km (3.1 miles); USGS M5.7 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The epicenter was located about 14.2 km (8.8 miles) NNE of Ljubinje (population 4 235), Bosnia and Herzegovina, 29.1 km (18.1 miles) NW of Bileća (population 13 257) Bosnia and Herzegovina and 46.9 km (29.2 miles) N of Dubrovnik (population 28 428), Croatia.
There are about 1.4 million people living within 100 km (62 miles).
According to the USGS PAGER, 7 000 people are estimated to have felt strong shaking and 64 000 moderate.
The quake reportedly lasted about 20 seconds and was felt throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and parts of Croatia and Serbia.
A 28-year-old woman was killed in the city of Stolac, BiH after a rockslide hit her home. A number of people have sustained minor injuries.
The worst affected cities are Stolac and Ljubinje where many homes and buildings were damaged. A lot of people living in those two cities spent the night outside of their homes.
Numerous landslides have been reported, as well as power outages.
The region is still recording aftershocks.
