A M4.9 earthquake hit eastern Algeria on Friday, August 7, 2020.
The moderate but shallow quake toppled three houses, damaged others, sent panicked people rushing into the streets and created giant cracks in the ground.

The moderate M4.9 earthquake occurred in northern Algeria on August 7th, 06:15 UTC.
The shallow quake (10km or 6.3 miles depth) woke up many people as it hit 3 km NNE of Sidi Mérouane and approx. 50 km NW of the historic town and regional capital Constantine (463,000 residents).
The first earthquake was followed by a 4.5 aftershock a few hours later.
Shaking was reported within a 70 km radius, especially in Sidi Mérouane (pop: approx. 20,000), where the ground shook heavily.
Although there are no reports of damage or injuries, the quake was strong enough to destroy 3 houses, including a four-storey villa and 31 other apartments.
