Watchfulness
Interpreting the Times
54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does. 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?
(Luke 12)
13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”
They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
(Luke 24)
--------------------------------------------------------------
The scriptures are crystal clear and unambiguous.
According to Jesus as written in Luke 12, if you are a follower of Jesus and have no interest in the signs of His coming, then you are a hypocrite. Period. People make it a point to know what interests them. In Jesus' day people knew the weather signs because that mattered to them. Jesus pointed that out. Yet despite the abundance of signs and prophetic fulfillments that pointed to His first coming, most of the Jews and gentiles of that day were unfamiliar with those scriptures.
Its exactly the same today - yet we have far more signs for the second coming and the closure of this age than we did for the first coming.
Jesus made it abundantly clear what to look for - the signs of this age and spent His last night prior to His arrest discussing these signs.
He told us 3 times in Luke 12 alone how important watching for His return is:
- 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.
- 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
- 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
So to summarize, Jesus expects us to know the signs, to be watching for the signs, and we will be rewarded for both knowing and watching. This topic was and remains very important to Him. If we don't know the signs or ignore the signs we are considered as hypocrites in His eyes and foolish. His words not mine.
Its right there and requires no special interpretation.
So why are pastors silent on this critical topic at this time in history?
Is it more important to build a big church?
Is it too difficult to study?
Is there fear that this word will be "controversial"?
Is there fear of being "labeled" as "one of them"?
Are any of the above good excuses to ignore the signs of His coming and to inform church congregations that we are at the end of the age and His coming is imminent?
I don't get it, I really don't.

History is His story, God’s story. Throughout human civilization the events of history past, present, and future have already been prerecorded. The Creator of the world, and everything thing in it, also created time, but is not subject to it. Over one quarter of the Bible’s content is on the subject of things to come. Library size volumes of commentary, nonfiction literature and supporting patterns of evidence have been published and documented to support the valid and verifiable proofs that the Creator knows the end from the beginning of human history. And the wonderful thing about that, is God, Who knows the end from the beginning has a wonderful plan for each of us, and He can be trusted.
