Zelensky: Europe will not be able to keep Ukraine safe without US

Zelensky says Europe will not be able to keep Ukraine safe without US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Europe will not be able to keep his country fully safe without the support of the United States, amid Ukraine's war with Russia.

“There are voices which say that Europe could offer security guarantees without the Americans, and I always say no,” Zelensky said during an interview with The Guardian outlet published this week.

He also that security guarantees without the U.S. are not real security guarantees.

When President Donald Trump was campaigning for president in 2024, he said he wanted to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia which started in 2022.

While the U.S. under Democrat President Joe Biden provided billions to Ukraine since the start of the war in February 2022, it's unclear whether such funding will continue with Republican President Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress.

The United States has committed at least $56.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine though both presidential drawdown authority and the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, according to a Defense Department report in September 2024.

Zelensky said during the interview that he is willing to negotiate an end to the war but it has to be through strength.
