Ballistic missile fired from Yemen triggers sirens across central Israel

A surface-to-surface ballistic missile was fired at central Israel from Yemen by the Iran-backed Houthis early on Sunday morning.

The missile attack set off sirens across central Israel at around 6:30 a.m., with alerts heard from the east of Tel Aviv to Modiin.

The military made several attempts to intercept the missile, the Israel Defense Forces said, though the results of the attempts were still being investigated. The IDF said the ballistic missile fell apart in the air over Israel, citing an initial probe.

“From a preliminary examination, it appears that the missile apparently disintegrated in the air,” the military said in a statement.

The missile was launched at around 6:21 a.m., and sirens sounded across central Israel at 6:32 a.m. According to the Houthis, the missile reached hypersonic speeds and reached Israel in 11 minutes.

The military attempted to shoot down the missile using both the long-range Arrow defense system and the Iron Dome, the latter of which is usually used for shorter-range attacks, the IDF said.

Shrapnel from the missile and the interceptors impacted open areas in the Ben Shemen forest, close to the community of Kfar Daniel —  a few kilometers southeast of Ben Gurion Airport — sparking a fire.

Shrapnel from an interceptor also caused slight damage at a train station on the outskirts of Modiin, some 25 kilometers (18 miles) east of Tel Aviv.

Police said they were additionally searching for potential shrapnel that may have fallen in areas east of Tel Aviv.

Videos and pictures posted online showed trails in the sky.

A military probe was set to ascertain why the missile was not intercepted before it reached Israeli airspace, or whether it was possibly partially intercepted by air defenses.
