Powerful 6.1 earthquake hits Philippines' Mindanao region

Powerful 6.1 earthquake hits Philippines' Mindanao region, no major damage reported

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Friday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake hit the region in the morning, though there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Local authorities said monitoring was underway to assess the impact.

This event follows another powerful earthquake that struck the same island a week earlier, registering a magnitude of 7.4. That quake prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning, which was later lifted after the threat subsided.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
