Germany's Merz Greenlights Ukraine To Strike Russia With German Weapons

WWIII Watch: Germany's Merz Greenlights Ukraine To Strike Russia With German Weapons

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has now authorized the use of German missiles for strikes against Russian territory, in a move that signals a dramatic escalation against Moscow.

Posting to X, Merz wrote: “We will do everything in our power to continue supporting Ukraine. This also means no longer having any range restrictions on the weapons we supply. Ukraine can now also defend itself by attacking military positions in Russia.”

Previously, Kyiv was permitted to use these weapons only against Russian forces in occupied Ukrainian territories.

Speaking at the “WDR Europaforum 2025” at the re:publica digital conference in Berlin, Merz stated, “There are no longer any range restrictions for weapons that have been delivered to Ukraine, neither by the British, nor by the French, nor by us, nor by the Americans.”

Two years ago, Remix News ran a video from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, outlining how the conflict started with countries sending helmets and then tanks to illustrate how deeply the West was involving itself in the war.

The conflict appears to only be escalating more and more since Orbán issued his warning.

As the war has progressed, nations like Great Britain and France supplied advanced weapons systems, including Storm Shadow and Scalp cruise missiles. Germany has been debating the delivery of its Taurus cruise missiles, which have a 500-kilometer range, a move Moscow has warned would make Germany a direct party to the conflict.

Merz did not explicitly mention Taurus missiles in his statement, but his predecessor, Olaf Scholz, refused to provide Ukraine with such weapons, fearing a sharp escalation of the war.

This policy change comes against a backdrop of continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and stalled peace efforts. While Merz emphasized that Ukraine does not target civilian areas — and should maintain that distinction — he stressed that a country unable to retaliate within the aggressor’s territory cannot adequately defend itself.

Notably, polling on the topic of Taurus missiles has consistently shown that a majority of Germans reject sending the missile to Ukraine.

However, it appears that Western countries are already actively targeting Russian forces. Reports from November indicated that Ukraine had already used long-range ATACMS missiles from the U.S. and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles against military targets in Russia.

Merz also cautioned that the West must prepare for a prolonged war, even as diplomatic channels remain open. He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin views Western offers of dialogue as a sign of weakness, asserting that “Nobody can now seriously blame us for not having exhausted all the diplomatic means that exist.”

At the same time, President Donald Trump has reportedly become increasingly disillusioned with Putin following Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine.Trump recently launched an unusually sharp criticism of Putin on his Truth Social platform, describing the Kremlin chief as “absolutely crazy.”

Kremlin warns of potential German-led ‘escalation’

Moscow considers Berlin’s potential shift on Ukraine’s use of German long-range weapons against Russia as a sign of “serious escalation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned on Tuesday.

His comments came in response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s declaration on Monday that there are now “no more range restrictions” on Western-supplied weapons used by Kiev against Russian military targets.

“If this is true, then this is an escalation and a serious escalation, which most severely undermines attempts for a peaceful settlement that have been made,”Peskov said, referring to the first direct peace talks in three years between Russia and Ukraine earlier this month.

Merz said on Monday that missiles from the UK, France, Germany, and the US could now be used without geographic limits against Russian military targets. His remarks sparked confusion over whether he was announcing a new policy and drew concern from within his own coalition. German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said no new decisions had been made on the range of Ukrainian strikes using German weapons beyond those set by the previous government.

Ralf Stegner, a member of Merz’s coalition partner, the SPD, called the comments “unhelpful” and called for a stronger focus on diplomacy

Kiev's Actions Harming Peace Process, A Week Long Drone Fight

The recent rise in the number of Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil is detrimental to the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict between the two countries, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said.

Over the past week alone, Russian air defenses have downed 1,465 Ukrainian drones over territories outside the active conflict zone, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Tuesday.

“At the very least, we can say that these actions by Kiev… are clearly at odds with the pursuit of the peace process,” Peskov told a press briefing that same day. “Of course we condemn these actions,” he said, adding that they “do not contribute to the advancement of the peace process.”

The Russian Defense Ministry stated on Tuesday that the “Kiev regime, supported by certain European countries, has taken a number of provocative steps aimed at disrupting the negotiation process,” which was initiated by Moscow earlier in May.

According to the ministry, there has been a spike in Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory involving drones as well as Western-made missiles. Military officials in Moscow estimated that between May 20 and May 27, air defense systems intercepted more than 2,300 Ukrainian UAVs, most of them operating outside frontline areas.

The ministry added that Russian forces retaliated with high-precision missile and drone strikes aimed “exclusively at Ukraine’s military and defense industrial facilities.”

Over the last seven days the Ukrainian military has launched over one thousand drones against targets in Russia. Most of these were shot down by Russian air defenses. There are no reports of any serious damage.

The biggest effect the week long drone attacks achieved was to shut down air traffic in Moscow for several hours.

After waiting a few days the Russian military responded in kind.

Over the last three days a record number of drones and missiles were launched against military installations and production facilities in Ukraine (archived):

Russia stepped up missile-and-drone assaults on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and other regions, killing at least 12 people overnight into Sunday after President Trump last week declined to impose further sanctions on Moscow over its refusal to halt its invasion.Russia attacked with a total of 367 drones and missiles—one of the largest single-night raids of the war, according to the Ukrainian Air Force—in a second consecutive day of pounding strikes that sent civilians running for shelters in the middle of the night

Over three days the Russian forces used some 1,000 heavy drones plus 58 cruise- and 31 ballistic-missiles to attack Ukraine.

The Russian attacks are overwhelming (archived) the western provided air defenses:

A YEAR AGO, for 30 drones to strike Ukraine in a single night was considered exceptional. Now Russia is saturating Ukraine’s air defences with hundreds of them. On May 25th the Kremlin pummelled the country, with what it called a “massive strike” against Ukrainian cities, featuring 298 drones, probably a record.

Russia is using more missiles, too: 69 were fired on the same night. As a result, Ukraine is once again stepping into the unknown. If the current ceasefire talks fail, which seems highly probable, air-defence units will need to ration their interceptors. More Russian missiles and drones will get through, to strike towns, cities and critical industry.

Last year the Kremlin was producing around 300 Shahed drones a month; the same number now rolls out in under three days. Ukrainian military intelligence says it has documents that suggest that Russia plans to increase its drone production to 500 a day, suggesting that attack swarms of 1,000 could become a reality.
The Russian forces are now using the sixth iteration of the Shahed drones. These now carry a 90 kilogram explosive load, fly much higher than previously and are less sensitive to electronic countermeasures (machine translation):

Khamenei Urges Iran-Pakistan Unity Against Israel, Praises Nuclear-Armed Ally

Khamenei Urges Iran-Pakistan Unity Against Israel, Praises Nuclear-Armed Ally

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday called for closer cooperation between Iran and Pakistan in confronting Israel, praising Islamabad’s firm stance on the Palestinian issue and highlighting the importance of unity among Muslim nations.

“Effective, joint efforts by Iran and Pakistan are necessary to stop the Zionist regime’s crimes in Gaza,” Khamenei posted on X, formerly Twitter. “The Palestinian issue is the most important issue in the Islamic world.”

Khamenei lauded Pakistan for resisting international pressure to normalize relations with Israel. “There have always been inducements for Islamic countries to establish ties with the Zionist regime, [but] Pakistan has never been influenced by those inducements,” he said.

“The only way to ensure the security of the Islamic Ummah is the unity of Muslim nations,” he added.

Pakistan is the only Muslim-majority country in the world known to possess nuclear weapons. Its strategic position and military capabilities have long made it a key player in the Islamic world. Khamenei’s remarks appear to signal a desire for deeper alignment with Pakistan in both political and security matters amid growing tensions in Gaza and shifting alliances in the Middle East.

Israel, Syria holding face-to-face meetings to calm border tensions

Israel, Syria holding face-to-face meetings to calm border tensions — sources

Israel and Syria are in direct contact and have in recent weeks held face-to-face meetings aimed at calming tensions and preventing conflict in the border region between the two longtime foes, five people familiar with the matter say.

The contacts build on back-channel talks via intermediaries since Islamist rebels Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad in December, say two Syrian and two Western sources, as well as a regional intelligence source familiar with the matter.

The sources speak on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject for two nations with no official ties and a history of enmity. The direct talks and their scope have not been previously reported.

On the Syrian side, the sources say contacts have been led by senior security official Ahmad al-Dalati, who was appointed governor of the province of Quneitra, which borders the Golan Heights, after the fall of Assad. Earlier this week, Dalati was also put in charge of security in the southern province of Sweida, home to Syria’s Druze minority.

Reuters is unable to determine who participated on Israel’s side, though two of the sources say they were security officials.

Three of the sources say there had been several rounds of in-person meetings in the border region, including in territory controlled by Israel.

Israel’s foreign ministry and Syrian officials do not immediately respond to requests for comment.

EU chief slams ‘abhorrent’ Israeli strikes in Gaza

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen denounces as “abhorrent” Israel’s deadly wave of strikes on civilian facilities in Gaza, including a school-turned-shelter, during a call with Jordan’s King Abdullah II.

“The expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza targeting civilian infrastructure, among them a school that served as a shelter for displaced Palestinian families, killing civilians, including children, is abhorrent,” von der Leyen says, according to a European Commission readout of the call.

The Israel Defense Forces said its strike on the school targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists who had turned the facility into a command center.
