People fled buildings as a huge earthquake struck a country popular with British tourists this evening.
The quake hit the Balikesir region of Turkey, sending tremors across a wide swathe of the country's western provinces, including Istanbul and Izmir.
The earthquake, estimated at magnitude 6.1, reportedly produced prolonged shaking that caused panic and fear among residents in affected areas. The extended duration of the tremors intensified concerns as people fled buildings and sought safety.
Geologist says that this earthquake is a "continuation" of another tremor that took place on August 10 and there have been 430 in in the past 10 days.
Prof Okan Tüysüz stated: "On August 10, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred north of Sındırgı. There have been 430 earthquakes in this region in the last 10 days. Therefore, this event is like a continuation of the event that began on August 10.
"No fault appears on the active fault map, which raises different possibilities. Research has been conducted in the region, but no fault was identified on the surface. The possibility of a fault in the lower layer breaking through to the surface is being raised. This should be discussed scientifically."
'Field surveys' are being carried out in impacted areas to assess damage
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said "field surveys" are being carried out to assess the damage from the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir.
In a statement on social media, Mr Yerlikaya he stated: "Regarding the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, all teams from AFAD and our relevant institutions immediately began field surveys.
"I offer my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters."
