- A nuclear blast in New York City would likely kill 1.2 million people instantly
- Adams said there is no imminent threat but that New Yorkers should prepare for natural disasters too
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the recent city public service announcement for how to deal with a nuclear attack was prompted by Russia's attack on Ukraine and warned that the Big Apple is still a big target.
'This was right after the attacks in Ukraine, and the Office of Emergency Management took a very proactive step to say 'let's be prepared,' the mayor said. 'Pack a bag. Know where your medicines are located. These are just smart things to do. And many of us, we think about COVID and other things that have been on the forefront, but we're still one of the top terrorist threats.'
The emergency management agency put out a 90-second PSA weeks after Russian state media claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin could wipe out the United States.
Adams defended the agency's video.
'I don't think it's alarmist,' he said. 'I'm a big believer in better safe than sorry.'
But he underlined that what motivated the agency to nudge New Yorkers to prep for a nuclear attack was the Russian invasion.
'My understanding is that it was really taking necessary steps after what happened in Ukraine to give preparedness,' he said.
In May 2022, Russian state media issued a chilling new nuclear threat to the US, boasting that Putin could wipe out the entire East and West Coasts with just four missiles.
