Las Vegas-area rattled by nearby 4.7 earthquake overnight


California Earthquake Rattles Southern Nevada


A magnitude 4.7 earthquake centered near Stovepipe Wells in Northern Death Valley, California, was felt in the Las Vegas Valley on Friday morning. The quake occurred at a depth of just over one mile beneath the epicenter.

The seismic event, which took place around 8:04 a.m., sent tremors through Southern Nevada, waking many residents. Several smaller earthquakes also struck the region throughout the morning.

While the epicenter was located nearly 35 miles outside of Beatty, Nevada, the quake’s impact was felt across the state line.

In the early morning quiet of Southern Nevada, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake originating from California’s Death Valley jolted residents awake. The Nevada Seismological Lab reported the seismic event near Stovepipe Wells, approximately 150 miles north of Las Vegas and near Beatty in Nye County. The earthquake struck at the shallow depth of just over 1 mile, making its presence starkly felt despite the distance, reported FOX5 Vegas.

So far there have been no reported damage although several aftershocks have been felt, including a 4.3 magnitude at 8:04 a.m.

A map on the USGU website shows that a majority of the Las Vegas valley felt weak to light movement from the quake, according to data taken from user responses.
