Shallow M6.1 earthquake hits Andreanof Islands, Alaska




A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit the Andreanof Islands, U.S. at 12:38 UTC on January 3, 2021. The agency is reporting a depth of 17 km (10.5 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.1 at a depth of 48 km (30 miles).

The epicenter was located 234 km (145 miles) WSW of Adak, U.S., and 1 380 km (860 miles) ESW of Klyuchi, Russia.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

A tsunami is not expected.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.
