The Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sunday, while the Makin Island group—carrying Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit—departed Monday.
Two American carriers, the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, are already operating in the Middle East. If the George Washington remains when the Theodore Roosevelt arrives, the United States will once again have three carrier strike groups operating simultaneously in the region.
That is no routine deployment.
Three Carriers Signal Extraordinary U.S. Firepower
A three-carrier presence gives U.S. Central Command the ability to sustain major air operations from multiple locations while reducing dependence on land bases that could themselves come under Iranian missile and drone attack.
The carriers bring fighter and strike aircraft, airborne command-and-control platforms, electronic-warfare aircraft and helicopters, while their accompanying destroyers provide additional missile-defense and Tomahawk land-attack capabilities.
The Associated Press reported that the buildup could place more than 20,000 U.S. sailors and Marines and hundreds of aircraft in the region.
The United States also has roughly 20 Navy ships operating in the region, according to the Journal, as American forces enforce the maritime blockade of Iran and protect commercial shipping through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.
The deployment therefore gives Washington substantially greater capacity to simultaneously defend American forces, protect shipping, intercept Iranian missiles and drones, enforce the blockade and conduct sustained offensive strikes if President Donald Trump orders another major campaign against Iran.
The buildup comes after Trump rejected Tehran’s latest ceasefire proposal and indicated that American strikes could resume following the November midterm elections if an agreement is not reached.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also extended deployments of U.S. air-defense forces and elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, further increasing America’s ability to respond rapidly to another escalation.
Remarkably, this would actually be the second three-carrier concentration in the Middle East this year.
In April, during Operation Epic Fury, the USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Gerald R. Ford, and USS George H.W. Bush operated simultaneously in the Middle East. CENTCOM said the three carriers brought more than 200 aircraft and 15,000 sailors and Marines into the theater.
What made that deployment historic was what preceded it: before April 2026, the United States had not maintained three carrier strike groups simultaneously in the Middle East since 2003, when American forces invaded Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Thus, if all three carriers remain after the Roosevelt arrives, the United States will have assembled a three-carrier Middle East force twice in 2026 after going more than two decades without such a sustained concentration.
