Kiev’s air defense arsenal has been depleted as the country tries to shoot down increasing barrages of Russian missiles and drones, a Ukrainian Air Force official has acknowledged.

“Intense Russian air attacks force us to use a corresponding amount of air defense means,” Air Force spokesman Yury Ignat said on Tuesday in a Ukrainian television interview. “That’s why we need more of them, as Russia keeps increasing its attack capabilities.”

Moscow’s forces have ramped up airstrikes in the past two weeks, launching hundreds of missiles and drones targeting weapons plants and other targets in Ukrainian cities. A Russian barrage on Monday morning targeted military-industrial facilities in the Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, Khmelnitsky and Zaporozhye regions, and Kiev admitted that its air defenses failed to intercept most of the missiles.

Ignat said Ukraine is currently reliant on supplies of guided missiles for its Western and Soviet-era air defense systems. Speaking by video on Sunday at a Swedish defense conference, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky warned that Kiev lacks adequate air defenses “on the battlefield and in our cities.”

The air defense shortfall comes at a time when Ukraine’s biggest military supplier, Washington, has run out of money to send more weapons to Kiev

Another strong blow to critical military and industrial infrastructure of Ukraine was caused by today's missile attack by Russia, which lasted more than 2 hours.

The missile "strikes" were also confirmed by the head of the Ukrainian armed forces, Balery Zaluzny, who in a post on Telegram spoke of damage to military installations.

"Critical infrastructures, civil, industrial and military, were attacked," Zaluzny said without giving further details on the targets hit.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced a powerful, massive strike on military and industrial targets in Ukraine using long-range precision weapons, including the Kinzhal hypersonic system.

The report says the strikes were carried out by both Russian naval and air forces.

"This morning (8/1), a massive strike with high-precision long-range air and sea weapons, including the Kinzhal hypersonic missile system, was carried out on the premises of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

In addition, Russian missile forces, artillery and attack drones attacked the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 108 areas.

In Ukraine, an air strike warning was announced in the morning and lasted more than two hours.

Explosions were recorded in various cities of the country, including Krivoy Rog, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Khmelnytskyi.
