Italy: Strong eruption of Stromboli eruption triggers 1.5-meter-high tsunami

A strong eruption of Stromboli volcano Sunday afternoon triggered a 1.5-meter-high tsunami off the island. Alarms sounded on the island but, according to the first investigations by the Civil Protection, no damage was reported.According to scientists, the tsunami was caused by a detachment of lapilli along the Sciara del Fuoco.

Lava flow from the northern crater area started around 2 pm due to continuous and intense explosive activity.

Around 14:28, small collapses of material began to be observed along the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco.

Around 14:31, parts of the crater rim of the northern sector collapsed and the lava overflow triggered one or more pyroclastic flows that finally ended into the sea, creating the small tsunami.

Meanwhile, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor is currently in the medium-high level with a tendency to increase.

The good news for the 500 inhabitants of the island is that the tsunami warning alarms and system did actually work… The bad news is that this is the second strong eruption in 2 days, it is sems the activity is not about to stop… Keep vigilant and strong!
