A rare M5.0 earthquake hit Northern Yukon on December 22, 2017, just below the Arctic Circle. This is the 6th largest quake ever measured in the area and the largest tremor this year.
The 5.0 magnitude earthquake, the strongest recorded in the province this year, struck at 08:00:12 AM (UTC). The epicentre was located 219km S of Fort McPherson, Canada at a depth of 1.7 km (1.05 miles)e.
While seismic activity is not uncommon in northern Yukon, this is the first earthquake larger or equal to M5.0 in 10 years. This year, the previous strongest quake was a M4.4 quake 8 months ago.
In the last 24 hours, 2 rare quakes rattled the central and eastern parts of the USA. The strongest earthquake in Alabama this years – actually a minor M2.7 – hit near Scottsboro on December 20, 2017.Wednesday night. About 4 hours later, Upper Valley folks felt the ground shake when a M2.3 earthquake hit near White River Junction, Vermont. Small earthquakes are rare, but not unheard of, in the northeast. Last month, a M4.1 earthquake struck near Dover, Delaware.
The Alabama quake was first measured at M2.9 and then downgraded to M2.7. The M2.7 – or M2.9 – is the 20th quake and the strongest recorded in Alabama this year – placed equal with 3 other M2.7 tremors.
