At a Thursday meeting with Morsi in the Iranian capital, Tehran, Ahmadinejad referred to Egypt as “Iran’s strategic ally” and expressed the interest of the Iranian nation and government in enhancing cooperation and friendly relations with the Egyptian government and nation.Ahmadinejad pointed out that friendly ties between Iran and Egypt will be to the benefit of the entire Middle East and said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to make its experiences and facilities available to the Egyptian brothers and [is ready] for the exchange of science, technology and expertise between the two countries.”
The Iranian president described Israel and West’s hegemonic policies as a threat to the region and the world and added, “The arrogant powers never favor the progress and strength of independent and justice-seeking nations and their friendship or animosity toward nations are based on the long-term objectives that they pursue in the international arena.”Ahmadinejad, however, warned against foreign meddling in Syria and pointed out, “We should be vigilant so that NATO and the other hegemonic powers will not be able to interfere in such affairs.”Morsi, who visited Tehran on Thursday to attend the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, said, “Egypt also considers Iran as its strategic partner and believes that, with a positive view to the future, everyone should provide suitable grounds for the regional developments.”“The feeling of friendship and fraternity between the Iranian and Egyptian people is reciprocal and we always honor the positions and the constructive forward march of Iranian nation in the process of growth, development and progress,” he said
Egypt's Naval Commander Osama Ahmed el-Gendy, said on Friday that Egypt has signed an agreement with Germany in which the former will acquire two German-built Type-209 attack submarines.He stressed that the deal had already been signed even though he says "the submarines currently used by the Egyptian navy are capable of carrying out their tasks and respond to anything in the Mediterranean or Red Sea. The Egyptian military is always looking to the future at to the latest innovations."
He added that during the year 2013, Egypt will further add four US-built missile ships to its navy. According to el-Gendy, these are FMC missile boats that each weigh 800 tons, are capable of sailing for a long period of time and have the highest levels of defense and attack capabilities.
He also noted that Egypt received additional ships from the US but Egypt is also receiving ships from other countries – rescue and towing ships from Holland as well as ships from Turkey.
Syrian government troops are shelling neighborhoods in Damascus after overnight clashes with rebel fighters, activists said on Saturday morning.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bombardment of the southern neighborhood of Tadamon early Saturday followed street fighting with rebels there.
Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, says troops also shelled the nearby neighborhood of Hajar Aswad.
Syrian regime forces have been able to recapture most areas of the capital that rebels seized in a July offensive.
IAF aircraft struck two centers of terrorist activity in the Gaza Strip overnight Friday in response to rockets fired from the coastal territory into southern Israel, according to the IDF Spokesman's Office.
The IAF recorded direct hits on its intended targets and all aircraft involved in the strikes returned to their bases safely, the IDF said. Palestinian sources said that two people were injured in the strikes which targeted Hamas training facilities.
The IDF stated that it would continue to take action against attempts to harm Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers, and that it holds Hamas responsible for all terror activity emanating from the Gaza Strip.
