Evening Update:

Daily updates just don't cut it anymore. We're arrived at a place in which the birth pains are happening frequently and keeping up is difficult. Just since this morning's updates we see the following:

Persecution:



The conservative preoccupation with presenting Sharia law as a threat to the United States’ culture as well as its national security has long been an unwarranted source of liberal derision. They may want to rethink their attitude after this story.

Recently, the city of Dearborn, Michigan, hosted the 2012 Arab International Festival. Naturally enough, the event drew demonstrators, specifically a group of Christian protesters who wanted to voice their discontent with what they saw as the predominately Muslim character of the event. Whatever you may think of this motive, the results of their behavior were unquestionably shocking.

In a video posted by Gateway Pundit early this morning, protesters were depicted as being battered by a constant hail of thrown debris, including water bottles and possibly even stones. Skip to nine minutes into the following video to see the “stoning” portion where large, grey projectiles that look very much like rocks are tossed into the air at the demonstrators as the crowd screams “Allahu Akbar” and closes in:

Violent incidents have contributed to a sense of insecurity among the Christian community in the West Bank. In 2006, Palestinians wielding guns and firebombs attacked five churches of various denominations in the West Bank and Gaza, following remarks by Pope Benedict XVI that angered many Muslims. Although no injuries were reported, the buildings suffered significant damage.

The plight of Palestinian Christians in the Gaza Strip is far worse. The Coalition for Responsible Peace in the Middle East, an NGO that monitors the abuse of Christians, has compiled a long list of violent acts directed against this vulnerable minority in Gaza. These include the 2007 attack on a monastery and school, when armed, masked men destroyed crosses and holy books, and stole computers and photocopy machines. During another rampage the same year, a gang of unidentified men ransacked the Latin Church and Rosary Sisters School, stealing a number of computers and ravaging pictures of Jesus, furniture, equipment, and holy books.


Ever since the supposed Arab Spring placed the Muslim Brotherhood as the majority party in Egypt, we at the Blaze have seen more than our fair share of disturbing videos from various spokespeople and operatives of the Brotherhood. Even so, when the man who is now President of Egypt says things that would sound more fitting coming from the mouth of an Islamofascist, all bets are off. The following video will likely disturb you, and we present it (and the screencaps of it) with minimal commentary simply because anything we said would likely dilute the extremity of what is said:


And before we proceed with the last few screenshots, we want to propose a thought experiment – can you imagine any Christian politician in the United States saying anything like this:

Middle East:


Russia reinserted itself into the Israeli-Palestinian "peace" process in a major way this week with a highly publicized visit by President Vladimir Putin.

While meeting with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday, Putin said that Russia had no problem recognizing an independnet Palestinian state, noting that Moscow had already done so during the days of the Soviet Union.

"We [recognized Palestine] 25 years ago, and our position has not changed," said Putin.

Putin thanked Abbas for his "responsible" leadership, either ignoring or rejecting the fact that even the Obama Administration now views Abbas' intansigence and insistence on pre-conditions as the main obstacle to restarting peace talks.

Putin also threw his weight behind Abbas' efforts to reconcile with Hamas and forge a national unity government with the terror groups, despite the fact that Hamas remains openly dedicated to the destruction of Israel.

The Palestinians hailed Putin's visit as "historic" and named a street in Bethlehem after the Russian leader, which was something of a faux pas considering Europeans typically only name streets after deceased persons.

Abbas' office said he is keen to hold the next Middle East peace summit in Moscow, where the Palestinians feel thier position will be more favored than in Washington or other Western capitals.

Damascus:



And look who gets blamed:

Palestinian terror group says it's investigating the death of Kamal Ranaja, but senior Hamas official tells AFP the group suspects the Mossad responsible; official message vows that his blood will "not be wasted."

A senior Hamas official later told AFP, "According to our information, Mossad was behind the assassination."

The official added that Ranaja was killed in his home, implicating "a group of people."



Hamas was quick to blame the Israeli Mossad spy agency for the death of its member in Syria, AFP reported.

A senior member of Hamas told AFPthat Kamal Hussein Ranaja was killed Wednesday in a suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus, adding that the group suspected Israel's spy agency of being behind the attack.

“A group of people entered his home in Qudsaya ... where he was liquidated,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. “According to our information, Mossad was behind the assassination.”


The EU And Things To Come:




More contol, more central power - just as expected:


On the eve of what she expects to be a "controversial" summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has challenged other member states on whether they are ready to relinquish yet more budgetary oversight to Brussels - Berlin's sine qua non for future debt sharing.

The paper, put together by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, gives "priority" to mutualising debt and puts "more controls and legal obligations" in second place and then only "very imprecisely."

What is needed is more EU powers to step in when national budgets get out of line, she noted.

The extra supervisory powers that Merkel is calling for chip away at what is the heart of a state's powers - the right to decide how and when to spend money.

Hollande has been pressing Germany to show more solidarity before Paris will accept a loss of sovereignty - traditionally a hard-sell among Hollande's own socialists

Things are progressing exactly as we would expect - on the road to the Tribulation.

Immersed In Signs:

Increasing violence in southern Israel, the revived Roman Empire, Syria, Egypt, and the Gog-MaGog alliance all continue to make progress towards their fulfilled prophecies.

Today, it's all about the dramatically increasing tensions around Syria, persecution in the region and the financial crisis precipitating an increase in centralized control within the EU.



Syrian President Bashar al-Assad declared on Tuesday that his country was at war and ordered his new government to spare no effort to achieve victory, as the worst fighting of the 16-month conflict reached the outskirts of the capital.

Video published by activists recorded heavy gunfire and explosions in suburbs of Damascus. A trail of fresh blood on a sidewalk in the suburb of Qudsiya led into a building where one casualty was taken. A naked man writhed in pain, his body pierced by shrapnel.

Syria's state news agency SANA said "armed terrorist groups" had blocked the old road from Damascus to Beirut.


The declaration that Syria is at war marks a change of rhetoric from Assad, who had long dismissed the uprising against him as the work of scattered militants funded from abroad.

"We live in a real state of war from all angles," Assad told a cabinet he appointed on Tuesday in a speech broadcast on state television.

"When we are in a war, all policies and all sides and all sectors need to be directed at winning this war."

Unconfirmed first reports from British, French and Turkish sources say British special operations forces crossed from Turkey into northern Syria Tuesday, May 26, and advanced up to 10 kilometers inside the country. The same sources report heavy fighting around the Presidential Guards compound on the outskirts of Damascus.

Later Tuesday, Gulf military sources confirmed the presence of British special forces in Syria.
Our military sources estimate that the British military drive into Syria, if confirmed, is designed to establish the first safe zone along the Syrian-Turkish border, to be followed by more Western military incursions to establish additional zones of safe asylum in other parts of Syria.

The reported British incursion, if confirmed, occurred at the tail end of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 24-hour visit to Israel Tuesday morning and would have posed a direct challenge to his repeated warning that Moscow would not tolerate Western military intervention in Syria and actively prevent it.

The two-pronged operation - the reported British incursion and major clash at the front door of Assad’s presidential palace - would appear to be designed to widen the cracks in his regime and speed its final breakup.


And once again, just as with Libya and Egypt, we have gone from a relatively stable regime to a radical Islamic regime - a regime who would be far more likely to engage in an aggressive action against Israel. We're seeing these last stages in biblical prophetic development coming together.

A video published by the Turkish Cihan News Agency showed Turkish tanks being transported by carrier trucks toward the frontier….’As awe-inspiring as Turkey’s friendship is, Turkey’s wrath is equally awe-inspiring,’ [Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip] Erdogan told the Turkish parliament on Tuesday. ‘The rules of engagement of the Turkish Armed Forces have changed,” Erdogan said. “Any military element that approaches the Turkish border from Syria posing a security risk and danger will be regarded as a threat and treated as a military target.’ Erdogan closed his remarks with an especially harsh condemnation of Syrian President Bashar Assad: ‘Turkey and the Turkish people will continue to provide all support until the people of Syria have been saved from this tyrannical, murderous, bloody dictator and his gang.’”

At an emergency meeting, requested by Turkey and chaired by NATO secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the council clearly denounced Syria’s aggression “in the strongest terms,” calling the shooting down of a Turkish jet over the Mediterranean “unacceptable.”

The downing of the jet has aggravated tense ties between the two neighbors. Turkey has repeatedly called on Assad to step down as 33,000 Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey, fleeing a government crackdown on a popular uprising.


French, British and Turkish military sources have suggested that elite British soldiers have entered Northern Syria and are operating ten kilometers inside the country in what is thought to be the first offensive western intervention against the Assad regime.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Tuesday morning that Western military intervention in Syria would not be tolerated by Moscow, and that Russia would act decisively to prevent it.

Back in February reports emerged suggesting that British and Qatari troops were operating inside Syria, directing rebel ammunition deliveries and overseeing the battle for the strategic city of Homs

Earlier this month more reports emerged indicating that Britain was planning to set up refugee camps inside Syria under a humanitarian pretext, when in reality the operation was a cover for assisting armed rebels fighting against the government.

If launched, US air strikes on Syria will be undertaken without Congressional approval, just as Obama green lighted the attack on Libya with a churlish disregard for the constitutional process. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has repeatedly stated that Congressional authorization for a military assault on Syria will not be sought by the Obama administration, which considers NATO and the UN to be the supreme authority.





Though they still retain safe havens in Pakistan and Afghanistan, jihadists are now heading to the Middle East to seek terrorist training as parts of the Arab world have "once more become a permissive environment for al Qaeda", British intelligence chief has warned.


Terming this a "new and worrying development" that "could get worse as events unfold," MI5's Director General Jonathan Evans said in a rare public speech here as his agency braces for an array of threats ahead of next month's summer Olympics.

Warning "the (Olympic) games present an attractive target for our enemies and they will be at the centre of the world's attention in a month or so," he said that efforts have been taken to ensure that the sports extravaganza did not become an easy target.


The MI chief said Iran was another source of potential concern, as the west and Israel put pressure on Tehran to abandon any nuclear weapon ambitions it may secretly harbour, The Guardian reported.

We've already seen AQ of the Arabian Penninsula branching out in Somalia and now Nigeria. Whether they are organized enough, and sophisticated enough to carry out a mass casualty attack at the Olympics isn't known, but they can certainly carry out individual attacks if authorities can't track them.

Ironic that the Arab Spring has led to the re-emergence of an enemy of democracy.

Meanwhile, more developments in the Roman Empire:




EU officials have drawn up a far-reaching plan that would eventually turn the eurozone into an outright fiscal union, but acceptance by EU leaders - whose powers it reduces - will require a major leap of political faith.

The seven-page document suggest that ultimately the 17-nation single currency area will need a treasury office and a central budget.

Among the short-term changes required is the de facto handing over of budget power and economic policies to the EU level.

A banking union "should evolve as soon as possible." Currently it is difficult to get a picture of the financial health of national banks, while taxpayers foot the bill when things go wrong.

Supervision of all banks would be at the European level and the EU authority would have "pre-emptive intervention powers." The paper - drawn up by the presidents of the European Commission, European Council, Eurozone and European Central Bank - moots giving the European Central Bank the ultimate authority.

Meanwhile, labour policies and tax polices - until now a no-go area for the European Commission - will no longer be exempt. An integrated economic eurozone will need "co-ordination and convergence in different domains of policy" says the paper explicitly mentioning "labour mobility" and "tax coordination.


“People are leaving Palestine [sic] in droves. Jenin, Aboud, Nablus -- these cities have lost much of their Christian population, some villages and towns have no more than two to three families,” said Peter, a 25-year-old resident of Bethlehem who agreed to be interviewed for this article on condition that his real name not be used.

Statistics show that more than 60 percent of the Arab Christians born in Palestinian areas over the past several generations now live abroad. Totaling some half a million people worldwide, 360,000 of them currently reside in dispersed communities in Canada, Chile, the United States, Germany, Australia and other countries. 154,000 remain in Israel and the Palestinian-controlled territories, with about 35,000 living in the West Bank and less than 3,000 in the Gaza Strip.

The flight of Christian is a growing trend across the Middle East. In Iraq, for example, the ancient Assyrian Christian community dropped from 1.5 million people to just 250,000 since the Second Gulf War broke out in 2003.

Christians are leaving Lebanon en mass, with 60 percent of their beleaguered community now living in foreign lands. The Coptic Church in Egypt has lost tens of thousands of parishioners following the dramatic events of the “Arab Spring.”

According to Peter, the problems for West Bank Christians started in 1993, the year the area was handed over from Israel to the Palestinian Authority. With the eruption of the Second Intifada in 2000, the situation deteriorated even further.

During that conflict, Islamist militants affiliate with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement used the town of Beit Jala as a base to launch sniper and mortar attacks on the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo. When the Israeli army was compelled to respond, it caused severe damage to the Christian houses and churches from which the attacks were launched.

But even after the uprising was over, Christians have reported numerous cases of illegal seizure of their property by Muslims from Hebron and other parts of the West Bank. Khaled Abu Toameh, a prominent Arab writer for the Jerusalem Post, reported in his article from June 2012 that the property-related complaints of West Bank Christians -- filed with the Palestinian Authority, the Vatican, and European leaders -- have fallen on deaf ears.

Things are moving faster and faster - just during the last 2-3 weeks it seems as though we have seen a major increase inmany of the various prophetic developments.

Stay tuned - who knows what may come next. With the situation in Syria escalating so rapidly, at this pace one can see the potential for major conflict there coming soon. What that may lead to is anybody's guess but the shadow of Isaiah 17 is looming larger and larger with every passing day.

The Gog-MaGog Alliance

Almost every day now, we see he northern axis of the Gog-MaGog alliance further forming and strengthening, and it is fascinating to watch. Especially given that these prophecies were written around 2,500 years ago.


President Vladimir Putin expressed his reservations over the prospect of a military strike in Iran, urging Israel Monday to learn from negative US experience in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Putin's comments were made in a meeting with Shimon Peres in Jerusalem, after Israel's president asked the visiting leader to speak out on the Iran issue.

"Look at what happened to the Americans in Afghanistan and in Iraq. I told Obama the same thing," the visiting president said in a meeting with his Israeli counterpart, cautioning against hasty military action. "There is no need to do things too quickly; one should not act without thinking first."

"Iraq has a pro-Iranian regime after everything that has happened there. These things should be thought out ahead of time before doing something one will regret later," he said. "One should not act prematurely."
Of course...Russia is essentially building these nuclear facilities for Iran - nuclear facilities which are being built in order to create arms which can destroy Israel. If course Russia knows how to play the international game, and makes the appropriate public comments but underneath the exterior the alliance between Russia and Iran is visible to anyone watching.



It is almost unnerving how "Damascus" seems to be the focus of this conflict.

Syrian President Bashar Assad’s soldiers are using artillery in fierce clashes against armed rebels near neighborhoods of government troops only five miles from the capital of Damascus, according to the Syrian Observatory for human rights.

Several people have been killed.

The right group told foreign news agencies that the location of the fighting is significant because it is home to families of government soldiers and officers.

The most senior general to desert Assad escaped on Sunday, along with a colonel and more than 20 soldiers. The general fled into Turkey Sunday night from Damascus and reportedly had been responsible for a large ammunitions depot.



Russia has no plans to abandon its naval base in Tartus, Syria, Navy chief Vice Adm. Viktor Chirkov said on Monday.

“We need that base,” he said. “It will continue to operate as it has until now.”

The Russian Navy needs the base to provide maintenance and technical support to Russian warships in the Mediterranean, as well as those on an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, he said.


Turns out that reports by the mainstream media of the Muslim Brotherhood being ‘mostly secular’ and basically harmless, were somewhat off the mark. They were only ‘mostly dead.’ The Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohammed Morsi was named the winner of the Egyptian election for President

Upon winning, Morsi claimed that very little would change, except of course for the better. So, I guess that explains why, he has claimed “Our Capital ‘Shall Be Jerusalem, Allah Willing’.” Sounds like a threat of war to me.

And from Allen West:

A year ago there were those of us who warned the Obama Administration of a Muslim Brotherhood takeover in Egypt. We were castigated as alarmists and loose cannons. Today our predictions have come to reality and the ominous specter reminding us of the Iranian revolution is evident. The Muslim Brotherhood claimed they would not run a presidential candidate. Clearly the Arab Spring is nothing more than a radical Islamic nightmare. Now we need to unequivocally reiterate our support to the Coptic Christians and Israel. What an incredible foreign policy faux pas by the second coming of President Jimmy Carter, the Obama Administration. I call upon President Barack Obama to cut off American foreign aid to Egypt, denounce the results of this election, repudiate the Muslim Brotherhood, and all radical Islamist political entities.

Sadly, West should not hold his breath on Obama and his administration’s support. After all, Obama’s administration was so ‘worried’ that they instructed Egypt’s military to cede power to The Muslim Brotherhood:

The Obama administration warned Egypt’s military leaders on Monday to speedily hand over power or risk losing billions of dollars in U.S. military and economic aid to the country.

As Egypt’s Islamist candidate claimed victory in a presidential run-off, Pentagon and State Department officials expressed concern with a last-minute decree by Egypt’s ruling military council giving itself sweeping authority to maintain its grip on power and subordinate the nominal head of state. The move followed last week’s dissolution of parliament by an Egyptian court.


Egypt’s newly-elected Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Mursi may cement his victory with a coup against the Egyptian army, according to an analyst at Egypt’s Al-Ahram Institute quoted in today’s Gulf News:

“Mursi will likely face resistance from state institutions mainly inside the army and the police,” said Sobhi Assila, a political analyst. “However, Mursi has a full team inside the Brotherhood who will assist him in running the country’s affairs to overcome this expected resistance. This may turn Egypt into another Gaza,” he said, referring to the Israeli-besieged Palestinian enclave ruled by Hamas.

Hamas, the Palestine chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood, seized power from the Fatah-led Palestine Authority in the Battle of Gaza in June 2007, following its electoral victory in the 2006 Palestine elections. There haven’t been any elections in Gaza since then.


Before Mursi’s victory was announced earlier today, Egypt’s secular parties denounced the United States for intervening in the elections in support of the Muslim Brotherhood. As Al-Ahram reported in its English edition today:

The US Embassy in Cairo refuted on its official Twitter account Sunday circulating claims that the US administration was backing the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Egypt’s ruling military council to fulfill its promise and hand over power to the “legitimate election winner.”

Clinton, on June 21m denounced the military’s attempt to curtail the powers of the Muslim Brotherhood as “clearly troubling,” adding, “The military has to assume an appropriate role which is not to interfere with, dominate or try to subvert the constitutional authority.” In the Egyptian frame of reference, that’s a vote for the Muslim Brotherhood.



The time has come for the United States to give up on the notion of democracy in the Middle East. It isn’t going to happen, at least not anytime soon, and the country is starting to look silly with so many of its intellectuals clinging to a notion that has no basis in reality. Just look at Iraq, set upon a course that many Americans thought would lead to democracy, and paid for with the blood of more than four thousand American dead and some thirty-three thousand wounded. What do we see in today’s Iraq? A budding dictatorship moving in the direction of the last one—but with a big difference: this one is dominated by Shiites, a power arrangement that appreciably enhances the regional influence of neighboring Iran, considered by many Americans as their country’s most nettlesome adversary.

Look at Egypt, where the “Arab Spring” set American hearts aflutter with the prospect of democratic pluralism. The lesson there is that it’s impossible to overestimate the willingness of the traditional power blocs to upend any democratic structures or procedures that threaten their position and prerogatives in that venerable land.

And yet in the face of all this, and more, many idealistic Americans hold fast to the idea that if we can just provide assistance and guidance and apply sufficient military power against the bad guys, democratic institutions eventually will blossom in the region. The problem here isn’t just that this notion lacks any shred of realism; more significantly, it undergirds the constant call for America to apply military force in the region on behalf of democracy . . . or the prospect of democracy . . . or at least the prospect that some Middle Eastern nation might begin a long journey toward democracy. Consider, for example, Libya, where the demise of the dictator Muammar el-Qaddafi led many Americans to visualize the stirrings of a democratic impulse, made possible in large measure by America’s judicious application of force.

A political website that contained stinging criticism of the Obama administration and its handling of the Fast and Furious scandal was ordered to be shut down by the Obama campaign’s ‘Truth Team’, according to private investigator Douglas Hagmann, who was told by ISP GoDaddy his site contained information that was “maliciously harmful to individuals in the government.”

Speaking with the chief investigator in the GoDaddy Abuse division, Hagmann discovered, “Ultimately it was found that the complaint originated ostensibly with a group associated with the campaign to re-elect Barack Hussein Obama.”

Turning to his contacts within government, Hagmann then contacted spoke with another source who confirmed that the ‘Obama Truth Team’ was responsible for the shut down order.

“I’m laying this right on the doorstep of the Obama Truth Team,” said Hagmann.

Almost immediately following the outcome in Egypt and quite predictably, we see this:


Newly-elected Egyptian president says strengthening of relations with Tehran will "create a balance of pressure in the region"; comments come after Morsy promises to "preserve int'l obligations" in apparent reference to Israel.

Fars quoted him as saying he was interested in better relations with Tehran. "This will create a balance of pressure in the region, and this is part of my program."

Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been severed for more than 30 years, but both sides have signalled a shift in policy since former president Hosni Mubarak was overthrown last year in a popular uprising.

US President Barack Obama called Morsy on Sunday to congratulate him on his victory.




It's official: the Muslim Brotherhood has taken control of Egypt, or will do so in the very near future.

To the consternation of many throughout the region, Egypt's election commission on Sunday announced that Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi would be the next president of the largest and most powerful Arab state.


Egypt's evolution from secular, Western-aligned dictatorship to an Islamist-controlled regime advocating Sharia Law so closely mirrors what happened to Iran in the late 1970s that Israel is understandably concerned.

Despite claims to the contrary for the sake of Western consumption (the Western media has inexplicably, but predictably swallowed those lies), Morsi said Sharia will be a central component of his presidency.

During the run-off presidential election, Shafiq strongly cautioned that were it to gain power, the Muslim Brotherhood would provoke armed conflict with Israel by making "Palestine" the core issue for all Egyptians.

Shortly after, Morsi appeared at an election rally where a Muslim cleric with ties to the Brotherhood declared that a Morsi presidency would result in the return of Jerusalem to Islamic sovereignty.


The Obama Administration seems to not share Israel's deep concerns over the Muslim Brotherhood rise to power, and that has more than a few Israelis scratching their heads in wonderment. In fact, Obama is leading the international call for Egypt's army to step aside and let the newly elected Islamists assume full control.



With the Muslim Brotherhood now in charge in Egypt and Syria in flames, Russian President Vladimir Putin makes his first visit to the volatile region on Monday since becoming president again in May, with a quick two-day journey to Israel and Jordan.

While Putin is scheduled to hold a lengthy meeting with PrimeMinister Binyamin Netanyahu in the afternoon – a one-on-one discussion followed by a larger meeting with staff and other ministers – the bulk of the visit will be symbolic: thededication of a monument to the Red Army for its victory over Nazi Germany, a state dinner with President Shimon Peres and a visit to Bethlehem.

The focus of the Netanyahu- Putin talks is expected to be on Iran and Syria, where the two countries have wide differences of opinion.

Putin was accompanied by some 400 people, flying in on four different planes. The massive entourage includes Putin’s staff, a large number of businesspeople and around 60 journalists.



Two Russian navy ships are completing preparations to sail to Syria with a unit of marines on a mission to protect Russian citizens and the nation's base there, a news report said Monday. The deployment appears to reflect Moscow's growing concern about Syrian President Bashar Assad's future.

The Interfax news agency quoted an unidentified Russian navy official as saying that the two amphibious landing vessels, Nikolai Filchenkov and Caesar Kunikov, will be heading shortly to the Syrian port of Tartus, but didn't give a precise date.

The official said the ships will carry an unspecified number of marines to protect Russians in Syria and evacuate some equipment from Tartus, if necessary.

Each ship is capable of carrying up to 300 marines and a dozen tanks, according to Russian media reports. That would make it the largest known Russian troop deployment to Syria, signaling that Moscow is becoming increasingly uneasy about Syria's slide toward civil war.

Moscow also has continued to provide Syria with arms, despite Western calls for a halt in supplies

A banking union would be the first step in a long-term roadmap to political union that he will outline to EU leaders, with dates and institutional problems such as treaty change set out by year's end.

Billionaire investor George Soros called on Europe to start a fund to buy Italian and Spanish bonds, warning that a failure by leaders meeting this week to produce drastic measures could spell the demise of the currency.
Policy makers should create a European Fiscal Authority to purchase sovereign debt in return for Italy and Spain implementing achievable budget cuts, Soros said in an interview in Londonyesterday. Funding for the purchases would come from the sale of European Treasuries, which would have low yields because they would be backed by each euro member, he said.
