7.1 Quake Hits New Quinea


Papua New Guinea earthquake: 7.1-magnitude quake strikes country's east



A 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea has been felt in Far North Queensland.
The large quake shook the country's east on Tuesday around 7.19am local time and had a depth of 146km, Geoscience Australia said.
The Bureau of Meterology says the quake was felt in Far North Queensland.
Its epicentre was 33km from the PNG town of Bulolo and 66km southwest from the town of Lae, in the country's eastern mountainous region.
Christopher Lam, 23, an entrepreneur who's lived in Lae for more than 10 years, said the quake "gradually increased in intensity" and knocked over household items.
"(It) lasted for a little more than 30 seconds," he told 7NEWS.com.au.
"There were people running out to the street when it happened.
"We've had minor earthquakes before in Lae but this by far was the strongest we've felt."
Lam also said there was some damage to shops.
PNG Power confirmed an emergency outage was in place for an indefinite period.
There were also reports of transformers on fire.
There is no tsunami threat.







A MASSIVE 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit near Papua New Guinea in the early hours of Tuesday morning.


The colossal earthquake just before 08.00am local time (11.00pm BST). The earthquake hit near the town Bulolo, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed. The quake hit a depth of 127km (79 miles) under the surface.

As it stands, there have no reports of any casualties.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has not issued any tsunami warnings following the colossal quake.
As well as no reported casualties, there have been no reports of damage.
The quake hit a mountainous region of the country in the early hours of Tuesday morning

Tuesday's quake will be the second earthquake the country has suffered in the last 24 hours.
A smaller 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of the country on Monday afternoon.
The first earthquake hit new the town of Panguna, which is situated on Bougainville Island.
No casualties or damage was reported at the time.
