"CrossPointe Community Church Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. said a deacon ran the shooter over, giving a security guard time to shoot the armed attacker outside the church, located at 36125 Glenwood Road in the city of Wayne.
The assailant has since been identified as 31-year-old Brian Browning of Romulus, Michigan, who "entered the property dressed in military-style gear, visibly armed and intent on disrupting the gathering of approximately 150 congregants, including many children," according to Pressow.
Pastor Kelly told the Detroit News "he was not aware of the shooter's identity but said the attacker does not appear to be a member."
A decade ago, CrossPointe Community Church initiated a security team in the wake of violence at churches across America, even though this specific church has not received any violent threats.
"We are sitting ducks to someone who wants to come and do harm," Kelly said.
"We will be convening our leadership to put a formal plan in place for the aftermath."
