US is set to shiver through record-breaking freezing temperatures as far south as FLORIDA, sparking fears Texas power grid could fail, with Northern Plains facing -50F wind chills for days on end

A major winter storm is bringing record-breaking cold to much of the continental US, with freezing temperatures forecast as far south as Florida as the storm progresses.

On Saturday, the arctic air mass was moving from Canada over the Northern and Central Plains, with morning temperatures approaching -50F possible in parts of Montana.

Snowfall and wind gusts of up to 40mph will bring blizzard conditions to the Corn Belt and Great Lakes later today, making travel dangerous and disrupting the final stages of campaigning for Monday's GOP caucuses in Iowa

Through the weekend and into next week, the storm will bring up to three feet of snow to parts of Michigan and New York, heavy rain across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and the rare possibility of freezing temperatures in Florida's panhandle.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the state's grid operator, issued a weather advisory warning of a 'deep freeze' from Saturday night through Wednesday, raising fears of a repeat of the grid's infamous 2021 failure.

Sub-zero lows could reach as far south as the Texas Panhandle, with temperatures in the 20s along the northern Gulf Coast, from East Texas to Florida's Panhandle, according to the Weather Channel

On Saturday, the National Weather Service warned that 'numerous sub-zero low temperature records could fall today and tomorrow' as the arctic air move in.

'Unfortunately, hazardous cold weather looks to stick around going into next week, with dangerously low temperatures and wind chills persisting through at least midweek,' the NWS warned.

Governors from New York to Louisiana have already declared states of emergency ahead of predicted snow and bone-chilling temperatures.

In St. Louis, the National Weather Service bureau warned of rare and 'life-threatening' cold.
