Israeli forces are encircling the town of Khan Younis as the war heads into a new phase after a seven-day truce aimed at the return of some hostages, Israel's top military commander said today.
"Sixty days after the start of the war, our forces are now encircling the Khan Younis area in the southern Gaza Strip," said Lt. Gen. Herji Halevi, chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
"We have secured many Hamas strongholds in the northern Gaza Strip and are now operating against their strongholds in the south," he said.
At the same time, the Israeli army announced that Israeli infantry entered the town of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, where it is conducting heavy fighting on the ground.
