Strong and shallow M6.2 earthquake hits Vanuatu



A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit Vanuatu at 20:52 UTC on April 9, 2022. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting the same magnitude and depth.


The epicenter was located about 65 km (45 miles) WSW of Norsup (population 2 998) and 95 km (59 miles) SSW of Luganville (population 13 397), Vanuatu.


There are about 60 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles).


4 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking and 111 000 light.

There is no tsunami threat from this earthquake.
