7.1 magnitude earthquake shakes South Sandwich Islands

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the Southern Sandwich Islands, the US Geological Survey said this morning, Reuters and TASS reported.

The outbreak was at a depth of 10 km below the earth's surface. 

The nearest settlement is 2500 km from the epicenter.

6.8 on the Richter scale shook the shores of Vanuatu

The island group is British territory in the southernmost part of the Atlantic Ocean, adds BTA.
