Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro stated on Saturday amid ongoing protests on the Venezuelan-Colombian border that Venezuela was cutting off diplomatic relations with Colombia and expels all diplomats from its embassy.
The US humanitarian aid is expected to attempt to cross the border into Venezuela after the country's opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president, Juan Guaido set February 23 as the date for bringing in US relief aid that had been collected at logistics hubs in Brazil's Roraima, Colombia's Cucuta and on the Caribbean island of Curacao.
The Venezuelan government has undertaken a number of measures to prevent humanitarian aid from coming into the country. President Maduro warned that the US and its allies were using "the pretext of delivering humanitarian aid" to try to "destroy the independence and sovereignty of the country."
Two People Reportedly Died in Clashes over Aid
Two people died in clashes in town of Santa Elena de Uairen over the aid that Venezuelan opposition plans to bring through the closed border with Colombia, Reuters reported, quoting an unidentified doctor at the local hospital.
Chilean President Says Part of Humanitarian Aid Sent to Venezuela Crossed Country's Border
A part of humanitarian aid sent to Venezuela managed on Saturday to cross the country's borders despite the obstacles created by the Venezuelan authorities, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said.
Local Media Report that First Truck with US Humanitarian Aid Burnt on Venezuelan-Colombian Border
According to reports by local VPI TV media outlet, the first of four trucks with humanitarian aid, which arrived from the Colombian city of Cucuta was burnt on Venezuelan-Colombian border. The broadcaster also reported that ten people have been injured.
