In a piece published on Sunday, Friedman said that the global reaction to the Israeli attack was largely absent due to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons in Douma two days earlier.
“It was the first time we attacked live Iranian targets — both facilities and people,” the senior military source told Friedman. In the attack, seven Iranians were killed.
The source also commented on the downing of an Iranian drone in February. “This is the first time we saw Iran do something against Israel — not by proxy,” he told Friedman. “This opened a new period.”
The IDF recently revealed that the drone was carrying explosives and sent to carry out an attack in Israel. The military stressed that the drone was detected by Israel’s aerial defense system when it took off from the T-4 airbase and was being tracked by the Israeli Air Force.
The drone was downed after it crossed into Israeli airspace. In response, the IAF fighter jets targeted Iranian sites in Syria. Syrian air defense forces targeted an Israeli F-16 fighter jet that was involved in the attack with over 25 anti-aircraft missiles. The pilots of the aircraft ejected from it before the Syrian missiles hit, landing near Mitzpe Adi. One of the pilots was critically injured.
