Security and rescue forces were on high alert and deployed in large numbers in Jerusalem and throughout the West Bank for Yom Kippur, which begins Tuesday afternoon and ends Wednesday at dusk.
Ahead of the holiday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz ordered a 48-hour closure of West Bank and Gaza Strip border crossings beginning Monday at 11:59pm and continuing until Wednesday at 11:59pm, the IDF Spokesman's Office said Monday.

Several mortar shells from Syria was fired on the Golan Heights Tuesday morning, causing damage but noinjuries. The IDF is on high alert.At least one of the shells exploded in a community in the northern Golan Heights.

Numerous mortar shells fired by the Syrian army landed near Kibbutz Elrom in the northern Golahn Heights early Tuesday morning.There were no casualties reported, and the Israel Defense Forces is investigating the incident. The shells were apparently fired at the Syrian village of Jubata Al Khashab, in response to Syrian rebel activity in the area.

Massive Explosions In Damascus Strike Top Syrian Army Building

Two loud explosions targeted one of Syria's top military command buildings in the capital Damascus on Wednesday, engulfing the building in flames, residents and state-television said.They said the explosions struck the General Staff Command Building (Hay'at al Arkan) in the Umayad Square in central Damascus, which is one of the top military headquarters in the country.There was no immediate word on casualties but ambulances could be heard racing to the sealed-off area.The rebel Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for twin bombings.

Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly expressed his attitude to the dollar as the world reserve currency. Perhaps for Wall Street, not Main Street.Record numbers of Americans need food stamps. More join their ranks monthly. Real unemployment approaches 23%. Average unemployment duration is near a record high.

Overall contraction is accelerating. Eurozone countries are deeply troubled. So is Britain. What’s coming looks worse than 2008. Deficits keep rising. Budgets are unsustainable. Growth is nonexistent. Bailout costs are rising.The implication for world economies is clear. They’re interconnected. What affects Europe spreads everywhere. Expect worse ahead than 2008.All major world economies “are entering recession or slowing growth simultaneously, leading the socio-economic and financial world into a black hole.”As a result, GEAB “maintains its June 2012 Red Alert” ahead of worse coming. It cites key factors without modern precedent. They’re heading world economies for a “double shock.”

Anti-Austerity Protests In Spain

 Protesters clashed with riot police on the streets of Madrid on Tuesday (25 September) as Spain braces itself for a fresh round of spending cuts linked to a potential bailout.
The initially peaceful demonstration turned violent when protesters tried to tear down barricades and threw rocks at riot police, which responded with rubber bullets. Police said at least 22 people were arrested and dozens injured.Violent protests are new to Spain, where people have in the past taken to streets in peaceful rallies, as with the "indignados" movement.

The violence on Tuesday comes ahead of a fresh round of austerity measures to be unveiled on Thursday in what the European Commission has called an "upgrade" of spending cuts already announced earlier this year.
