Israeli Warplanes Bomb Gaza Strip

Israel has just "taken it up a notch" with new air strikes directed against Gaza.

Several articles are just now beginning to emerge in this breaking news story (6:50 pm EDT):

"Israeli planes and helicopters bomb Gaza targets"

Israeli planes and helicopters carried out at least seven missile attacks on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Friday, causing damage and slightly wounding two children, Palestinian witnesses and officials said.

They said four air strikes took place in open areas near the central town of Khan Younis, the site of a deadly clash last week between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen.

A fifth missile hit a cheese factory in Gaza City, setting it on fire, witnesses and Hamas officials said. Hospital officials said two children were injured by flying debris.

Helicopters struck twice in the central refugee camp of Nusseirat, destroying a metal foundry. There were no casualties.

"Thirteen Israeli strikes hit Gaza Strip"

Israeli warplanes have carried out at least 13 air strikes on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, Palestinian sources have told the BBC.
They said several of the strikes took place in Gaza, with the rest hitting the towns of Khan Younis and Rafah.

Four of the air strikes took place near the central town of Khan Younis, near the site of last week's clash.

Militants in the Gaza Strip have recently stepped up rocket fire directed at Israel.

On Wednesday, they fired a rocket into an empty field in southern Israel, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, military sources said.

Tensions in the region are running high after a recent Israeli government announcement of plans to build 1,600 new homes for Jewish people in East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as a capital of a future state.

It is always hard to know which of these skirmishes will progress to something more significant. We'll be watching developments with this very closely and posting if this situation escalates further.
