Quake Measuring 7.3 Strikes Indonesia, Local Tsunami Warning






A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 was recorded off the Moluccas in Indonesia on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and a tsunami warning was issued for the area near the quake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said hazardous tsunamis were possible within 300 km (185 miles) of the quake's epicenter. The center said there was no danger of a Pacific-wide tsunami.
Tsunamis could be expected to reach Indonesia, the Philippines, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Marshall Islands, and as far away as Japan's Okinawa and Taiwan, it said.
The first waves could reach land within 30 minutes and the last within about six hours. "The initial wave may not be the largest," the center warned.
The quake was measured at a depth of 47 km (34 miles), with the epicenter 134 km (83 miles) northwest of Ternate, an island in eastern Indonesia's Moluccas.
Another quake measuring 6.2 was recorded soon after off Indonesia's Sulawesi, according to the USGS.




7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck 150 kilometers (93 miles) north-northwest off the coast of Kota Ternate, Indonesia, on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake struck at 10:31 a.m. local time at a depth of 47 kilometers (29.2 miles), according to the USGS.

No Pacific-wide destructive tsunami is expected, but "hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake epicenter," according to the National Weather 
Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.The estimated time of arrival for the initial tsunami wave along Indonesia's coast is within the next six hours, the warning center said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it will update its warning within the hour.

This earthquake has caused serious damage in the Lake region of Kyrgyzstan.
- School classes have been canceled
- Intensity VII has been felt in various communities (Kadji-Sai, Bokonbaevo, Tosor, Ton and Tamga).
- There are no reports of casualties at this point.
- The epicenter of the earthquake was 6 km north- east of Kazhi-Sai town, 60 km North-East of Ton village.
